Dreams & Prayers

On the 12th of March in a powerful collaboration the Darwin Symphony Orchestra and Darwin Chorale
combine to bring the Darwin community a memorable and impactful performance – ‘Dreams & Prayers’.

For the DSO this is the first of the 2016 DSO Master Series concerts that are inspired by storytelling, and will pay tribute to one of the greatest writers of all – Shakespeare, who is being revered around the world on the 400th anniversary of his death. For Darwin Chorale it opens an exciting year, which includes paying tribute to the music of Karl Jenkins and The Beatles!
This concert includes the magical music from Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Beethoven’s stirring and tragic overture to Coriolan and a selection of short dramatic pieces inspired by Shakespeare’s sonnets, composed by Darwin’s very own Cathy Applegate. We are proud to also present the medieval poem Stabat Mater, set to music by celebrated Welsh composer Karl Jenkins. He incorporates both Western traditions and Middle East influences into this hauntingly beautiful work that depicts the suffering of Mary during Christ’s crucifixion.
This concert will be conducted by the DSO Resident Conductor – Stephen Pevely and Darwin Chorale Conductor – Michael Loughlin.
