DIAL BEFORE YOU DIG THE ESSENTIAL FIRST STEP

The free Dial Before You Dig service should always be your first point of call when undertaking any home improvement project involving excavation.

Dial Before You Dig is a national community service designed to prevent damage and disruption to the vast underground pipe and cable networks around Australia. These underground assets provide the community with the essential services that we use every day such as electricity, gas, telecommunications and water. Dial Before You Dig acts as a single point of contact between these underground asset owners and excavators.
It is important to find out as much information as you can about underground infrastructure before excavating. Damaging these networks can result in service interruption, large financial penalties, injury and in the worst-case scenario, even death. The simplest domestic excavation work can still lead to damage, so whatever your home improvement project, if it involves digging, you need to use the free Dial Before You Dig service before you commence any project.
Lodging an enquiry is a simple process. You provide Dial Before You Dig with the details of where you plan to work by lodging an enquiry online at www.1100.com.au or by accessing our mobile web service on any mobile device. There is also an iPhone app for iPhone users. The details of your enquiry are sent to the affected asset owners who will then respond to you directly with information on the location of pipes and cables, generally by way of plans via email.
Once you have lodged your enquiry with Dial Before You Dig and have received the plans, you should also ensure that you work safely once onsite. This should include looking for clues that underground infrastructure is present, such as sighting water meters, pits, inspection points, etc. Manually dig to look for the asset if you believe it is in the locality. It is important to note that the plans do not always pinpoint the exact location of assets, they identify the presence of pipes and cables in the vicinity of your excavation area.
Dial Before You Dig is the essential first step. Lodge your enquiry, receive the plans, but also work safely once you get onsite.

Visit www.1100.com.au to lodge an enquiry and to access a range of resources to assist you in protecting Australia’s underground infrastructure.
